Dealing with Physical Abuse at Home

Letter from Sophia, aged 16

I used to get physically abused alot at home and there isn't day I don't remember it, it still happens but not as bad as before now I can fight back. It is hard emotionally for me to live at home I stay in my room all the time to keep safe and my mum verbally abuses me really badly. I think she is mentally ill but she won't get help. Is there anything I can do?

Suffering from physical abuse at home can be extremely traumatic and isolating. It can be very hard to speak out if we feel we have no-one to turn to, and it can make us feel very ashamed even though it isn’t our fault. The first thing we told Sofia* (her name has been changed to protect her identity) was that she was not alone and we provided a dedicated 1-2-1 counsellor for her to contact whenever she wanted.

Unless your counsellor feels you are in danger of being harmed or harming yourself, we do not tell anyone what you have told your counsellor. The 1-2-1 online service is completely confidential and you can ask your counsellor anything you want. Please feel free to sign up today to try it out for yourself.
